Janie Weatherford, RN, IBCLC

Janie has cared for moms and babies since 1990, as a mother-baby and newborn nursery nurse, and now as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.Breastfeeding was one of the highlights of her life, and she loves helping others become successful in this area. She homeschools two of her three children (the oldest is in college), and teaches baby care classes for UK Childbirth education as well as homeschool co-op classes.She also teaches “Happiest Baby on the Block” classes and is excited to be able to help new parents gain skill in calming their infants and confidence in themselves as parents. She has experience in teaching in cross-cultural settings both locally and in Yucatan, Mexico.For fun, she likes to hike, garden, cook and read.



Elizabeth Stapleton, RN, IBCLC

Elizabeth has been active in helping moms meet their breastfeeding goals since 2001.  Along with teaching breastfeeding classes at Baby Moon and doing lactation consults, she works as a post partum nurse and lactation consultant at a local hospital.  She home schools her three children, whom she breastfed for a total of 6 years.  When she isn’t working with new moms and babies, Elizabeth enjoys  reading, gardening, cooking, and hiking. 



Kristi Rhode, RN, IBCLC

Kristi has been with Mother Nurture since 2007. Before coming to us in Lexington, she worked at a similar shop in Phoenix where she was trained to become a Certified Lactation Counselor. Kristi has been caring for breastfeeding families since 2001. Kristi brought Latch Check Clinics and Pump Trials to Mother Nurture. Kristi recently finished nursing school and became an RN during the summer of 2010. She plans to sit for her IBCLC exam July 2011. Kristi has been extremely busy with nursing school, working and motherhood. Mother Nurture clients love Kristi's warm, nurturing approach and ability to teach families the skills they need when they go home.

Educational Components
All candidates for the exam must have lactation specific clinical experience and education. The amount varies by pathway. Requires 1000 hours of practice or directly supervised practice, plus 45-90 hours of lactation education.
Five day workshop based on the WHO/UNICEF Breastfeeding Counseling Training
Five day workshop.

14 hours minimum breastfeeding curriculum which varies from state to state.
Completion Requirements
Successful completion of the designated pathway requirements within the 5 years immediately prior to exam application
Program attendance at a CLC course by Healthy Children's Center for Breastfeeding, pass all required in-class competency verification and homework and passing of final exam. Additional clinical work and written paper for 3 college credits (optional).

Attendance in WIC sponsored class.
Certification Offered
Certified as IBCLC upon passing the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) certification exam for lactation consultants. IBLCE's certification exam is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA)
The Certified Lactation Counselor course is an ANCC accredited Nursing Skills Competency Program. Certified as "CLC" upon passing the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice (ALPP) certification exam and competency verification. Valid 3 years.
"Lactation Educator Certificate" from institute offering program.

"Peer Counselor Certificate"
Registration
IBCLC and RLC are certification marks registered with the US Patenent and Trademark Office. IBCLC is the primary certification mark. Use of the RLC designation is limited to individuals who hole the IBCLC credential.

Re-certification Requirements
IBCLCs must re-certify every 5 years. Five years after last passing the exam, re-certification by continuing education is allowed. Re-certification by exam is required every 10 years.
